How much does a website cost?

Why two websites can cost very different amounts, which items make up the price and how to compare two quotes without being misled.

By Alessandra De Luca · Updated

In short

The cost of a website depends mainly on how many pages you need, which features (brochure website, e-commerce, bookings, several languages), who writes the copy and provides the photos, and what support after launch includes. That’s why a price quoted sight unseen says little: what matters is a written quote that lists what’s included.

Why quality matters.

The items that make up the price.

How many pages

For many businesses a few well-made pages are enough; others need a page for each service, which also helps them get found on Google.

Which features

A brochure website presents the business. Online bookings, contact forms, versions in several languages or an online store add work, and therefore cost.

Copy and photos

Who writes the copy? Who provides the photos? A quote that includes the copy is different from one where you have to write it yourself. The photos can be yours, taken following precise directions, or a professional photographer’s, which is a separate cost.

Design and animations

A website designed from scratch around your business, with polished animations, takes more work than a ready-made template.

Optimisation for Google and AI

Speed, structure, copy and structured data: some agencies include it, others charge for it separately. Always ask whether it’s there.

One time or every month?

There are often two parts: an initial one to design and build the website, and a monthly one that keeps it alive. The monthly fee can cover domain, hosting, security certificate, updates, support and routine changes. When you compare two offers, also compare what happens after launch.

Every year, whatever happens, the domain and the web space your site lives on (the hosting) are renewed, along with the security certificate; then there are updates and support. These can be separate items or all be part of the monthly fee: always ask which ones are included. The same goes for the privacy policy, cookie policy and consent banner: some offers charge for them separately, while with Aleryc they are a separate item, priced in tiers by type, shown in the quote.

The costs that stay separate.

  • An e-commerce platform subscription, such as Shopify, if you sell online.
  • The ad campaign budget, paid directly to the platform.
  • A photo shoot with a professional, if you choose one.

How to compare two quotes.

  1. Line up the included items: pages, features, copy, photos, optimisation, domain, hosting, support.
  2. Check what stays separate and who pays for it.
  3. Look at the timeline and how the deposit and balance are paid.
  4. Read the term, renewal and cancellation of the monthly fee.
  5. Check who the domain is registered to.

Aleryc’s prices.

You’ll find them on the Websites page, in three packages. For a brochure website, the build starts at €483 for Basic, €1,274 for Standard, the one we recommend for most businesses, and €3,236 for Premium, plus a monthly fee of €36, €57 or €94 covering hosting, security certificate, backups, changes and the report (the domain and the privacy and cookie policies are added separately, priced in tiers by type). For an online store with Shopify, it starts at €1,162. These are starting prices, because no two businesses ever need the same thing: after a free consultation Aleryc prepares a written quote, and the amount in the quote is what you pay, with no items popping up later. Aleryc brochure websites: what each package includes. We recommend Standard for most businesses. Under Italian tax rules, no VAT to add: we operate under Italy’s flat-rate tax scheme, and the stamp duty, when due, is included. If you’re based in another European Union country (we only work with clients who have a VAT number), any taxes or mandatory costs for that country are shown in your written quote, before you sign.

The monthly fee always covers hosting, security certificate, backups, support, changes and the monthly report. The domain (in your name) and the privacy and cookie policies are separate items in the quote, priced in tiers by type; features that require an external paid service are a separate item in the quote, at your expense; 1-year minimum term, then automatic renewal for the same length of time, unless cancelled with at least 30 days’ notice. Any package can be customised by adding the services you want, at extra cost: from then on it becomes a custom quote starting from there.

FAQ

The questions we get asked most.

It depends on what is included: every year at least the domain and hosting must be renewed, along with the security certificate, and then you need updates and support. With Aleryc, hosting, updates, security and changes are included in the website’s monthly fee; the domain and the privacy and cookie policies are added separately in the quote, priced in tiers by type. You can also choose the single payment at contract signing: build and 12 monthly fees together, 5% off.

Often both: an initial part for the build and a monthly fee that covers, depending on the offer, domain, hosting, updates, support and routine changes.

Because they often don’t include the same things: copy, photos, Google optimisation, support and monthly fee may or may not be there. Compare the items, not just the total.

Usually an e-commerce platform subscription, the ad campaign budget and any professional photo shoot. They should be stated in the quote before you sign.
