A glass of Barolo on a wooden table in the vaulted cellar, by candlelight

Barolo · Langhe

Time,
bottled.

Five generations, seven hills, one way of waiting: the way of oak and silence.

The estate · since 1898

Settecolli began when Giovanni Bertola bought a south-facing vineyard above La Morra and decided to plant nothing but Nebbiolo. A hundred and twenty-eight vintages later, we still work this way: few bottles, large casks, no hurry.

Today · the fifth generation

Today the estate is run by Chiara and Matteo.

Eighteen hectares spread over seven hills, each one vinified separately because each one makes a different wine. We harvest by hand, we have farmed organically since 2004, and in the cellar we intervene as little as possible: the rest is done by the oak, the cool of the hill and time.

  • 18hectares of vines
  • 7hills, vinified separately
  • 42,000bottles a year

Five generations

  1. 1898

    The first vines

Giovanni Bertola plants Nebbiolo on the Bricco Rosa. No other grape, ever since.

  2. 1931

    The vaulted cellar

Dug by hand, eleven meters into the hillside. It still stays at 14 °C without any air conditioning.

  3. 1967

    The first Riserva

Three years in cask, four in bottle. Released only in the vintages that deserve it.

  4. 2004

    Organic

All seven hills go organic: no herbicides, only grass and handwork.

  5. Now

    Chiara and Matteo

The fifth generation: 42,000 bottles a year and the same patience as in 1898.

The hills

Seven hills, seven different wines.

Same grape, same family, seven soils. Pick a hill to discover what grows up there.

The cellar

Eleven meters under the hill.

Dug by hand in 1931, it stays at 14 °C all year round without a single air conditioner. Forty large oak casks rest here, some older than the grandparents of the people who work here today.
