Aerial view of Circolo Valverde: the tennis courts, the pool, the golf course and the soccer field among the pines

Our story · since 1961

Sixty years
on red clay.

It was a hillside meadow with a pine tree in the middle. Thirty families from Varese bought it together to build two tennis courts. The rest came one season at a time.

  1. The red clay courts in the morning

    1961

    Two courts
    and a pine tree.

In the spring of 1961 the founding members level the meadow with their own hands and lay the first red clay, trucked in from a quarry by the lake. A wooden shed serves as the changing room; a fountain provides the water. The first match is played on a Sunday in June, under the pine tree that still stands today.

  2. The pool with its swimming lanes and sun deck

    1968

    In comes
    the water.

Families grow, and the members’ children want somewhere to spend the summer. A twenty-five-meter pool is dug, a lifeguard takes up the tower and a travertine sun deck is laid. Ever since, in July, the club has opened at seven in the morning.

  3. The clubhouse terrace in the evening: tables set for dinner, string lights and pine trees

    1979

    The clubhouse
    and the terrace.

The old farmhouse at the end of the drive becomes the clubhouse: locker rooms on the ground floor, the restaurant upstairs, and outside a terrace with string lights hung between the umbrellas. This is where matches end, usually over dinner.

  4. The golf course among the pines in the afternoon light

    1994

    Nine holes
    among the pines.

The club buys the neighbor’s field to the south. A golf course architect lays out a nine-hole executive course, with bunkers, a small lake and a driving range. The first golf pro arrives from Biella and stays for twenty years.

  5. The 7-a-side soccer field at night under the floodlights

    2008

    The lights
    come on.

Next to the parking lot, a natural-grass 7-a-side field is built, with floodlight towers for playing late into the night. Afternoons belong to the soccer school; evenings to members’ tournaments and the Thursday night game, which is never canceled.

Today

A whole day,
from the first serve to the last match.

“Come for a match,
stay until dark.”

The club motto, written above the clubhouse door
